First off, props to Blazin Low for this thread.

My main question is, I want an alarm for my Blazer. I've seen them priced anywhere from $100- $800(cdn.), now I know the general rule of thumb is to spend 5-10% of what your truck is worth on an alarm, but I want to know what to get exactly. I've heard hoodpins are great, cause then they can't get under your hood to cut any wires. But that's not why I want an alarm. Nobody is gonna steal my truck, they'll just steal OUT of it. Are Alpine Alarms any good? They seem to be one of the cheapest.

i have a DEI rattler in mine
DEI makes viper alarms...so i figured it was just as good

i got mine when i used to work at circuit city (same time when i got my system) and the guys there said its not worth the extra money to get the "viper" name

i love my alarm too
perhaps a little too much!
on my block there are a lot of little kids (i have 2 younger siblings)
and they LOVE to play ball right in front of my house
the best is when someone accidently bumps my truck, or something falls on it...the alarm goes off and scared the crap outa the kids. god i love shock sensors

How much does the DEI Rattler run for? I'm seriously going out to research this next weekend. Is it loud? Does your remote sound when your alarm goes? If not, how do you know when your alarm goes off if you are far away?

Nitro, DEI is Directed Audio which therefore MAKES viper alarms along with Clifford and Avital. DEI bought these companies out in july 2000. Vipers are the best damn alarm i have seen. Well, I seen a lot of nice alpines, but price about 500 or 600 dollars. Just thought i'd clear that up. maybe you knew that, but i am getting the impression that you didnt know that DEI is viper. Now i can buy a viper that rolls down windows and unlock doors, pop back window of the blazer and lock door plus panic button. for 189.99 brand new. now dont tell me viper is too expensive.

Is that with Install?

Also I have heard of an alarm that when your to close to the vehicle it cherps but will not go off unless somthing INSIDE the car move. So like if I was to leave my windows down while I go inside for somthing I don't have to roll them up. There are lots of areas where your outside temp gets high (CAL., TEXAS, FLA., etc...) but in OKLAHOMA we have very high humidity which means you feel the heat more and I tend to leave my windows down all day when I'm at home so I don't sweat my b@llz off when I get in. and I never have and never will have A/C in my blazer. Do you know who makes such an alarm and about how much for it??

and i didnt get all the frills like having my back window pop open and stuff....i just got the shock sensors, and my hood/tailgate alarmed

i may tie it in with my horn too, to get some extra noise =)

I have had many alarm systems in my years of comp stereo's. Some of the brands that I have owned were, ALPINE, VSE (2 units), CODE ALARM (2 units), and VIPER. Out of all of them, the CODE ALARM is the only one that I have had problems with, on two occasions. Purchased one back in 1992 for a car, had it pro-installed, would go off when the temp dropped below 10 degrees, they installed 3 different systems, had same problem. Electrical system was gone over with a fine tooth comb. CODE ALARM finally purchased the system back from me, so they did stand behind their product.
Now just last year about this time we had our truck broken into and we went on the look for an alarm. Decided on the CODE ALARM, I called CODE ALARM talked to Customer Relations, expressed my concern of seeing previous problem. They assured me that the problems had been worked out, so we picked up an Elite 1100 if I am not mistaken. Had it pro-installed from a highly recommened shop here in Fort Wayne, Ind. System lasted for 4 months, then would not arm. The system has a lifetime warranty, had to return to installing dealer for replacement. Still working, but I don't trust it at this point. Having owned many systems I would say that all protected fairly well, (exception CODE ALARM) just get one that has a good warranty, that fits your budget with the features that you desire. I am not a fan of shock sensors, due to the fact that they have a tendancy to go off when not warranted. The main reason that you get an alarm is for protection from theft, not parking lot damage ( as I call it ) So in the middle of the night when it goes off, you have had a door opened (dome light turned on), this will keep down the false alarms, which will keep the neighborhood happy.

I think that you can buy louder sirens for most alarms.

If I am on the right track, the siren is just a water protected speaker, and you could either get a another siren and wire it up with the other one to double the cone space.

I havre a viper 500 and i love it. it goes off only when it needs to. i live on the jersey shore so it gets windy sometimes, and my alarm rarely goes off. But if someone bumps into it(which happens all the time in jersey) it starts blarin like a mother. Id reccomend a viper to anyone that asked.

The only time I pay any attention to alarms is when I'm a parking lot and I'm setting them off with my system. Otherwise they do no good for me. If someone wants to break into a vehicle, chances are, they don't give two shits about an alarm.

I have a Crimestopper Alarm in my Blazer, model number 9400RS. I purchased it on ebay for like 60 bucks about 7 months ago. It has every feature: remote start, shock sensors, keyless entry, panic, blah blah blah....anyways I had it installed professionally about 3 months ago and it cost me 260 dollars. the only problem i've had was the night my alarm was installed, the receiver went bad. So I called crimestopper and i had to send them the control module and the receiver, and a couple days later i received a new one in the mail. Since then i haven't had a single problem with the alarm. Crimestopper has a lifetime warranty, if anything else does go wrong. And my alarm is extremely loud!!!!

Slim, that is an age old question... Alarm or no alarm, if the theif wants in... a little noise will not stop him. But for the kid down street, who is timid... it will stop him after he breaks the glass, or whatever to gain access. So your correct, if they really want it, it's gone... As for added protection, we don't listen to the system at any volume around where we live. It's a big flashing sign that say "come and get it boys" I also feel the same way about graphics on the vehicle that advertise the system. Now don't get me wrong I think that they look neat. but just not for me. I used to do things like that when I was young, but after getting my stuff lifted... I changed my mind... I was cleaning glass out of the carpet for more than a month...
