My shit from suicide doors finally got here! Plans are to bag the back and bodydrop all at once and lay it over 20s. I was going to keep it a "secret" and just pop up with the rockers laying flat on the ground but I've never had a multi-page project thread and I want one :D
The front had already been bagged earlier this year.
Here's some pics of what I've done so far
Full lift on 2b7s

Laying on drag block, it still lays without it though
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/6/web/582000-582999/582923_64_full.jpg
My 4-link. It kicks ass! My only complaint was that the lowers weren't welded. I only wanted the uppers unwelded but no biggie, I'll just weld it myself, just a misunderstanding
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/6/web/582000-582999/582923_91_full.jpg
If you were wondering why the square lowers, this is why. "Canti" brackets

My SD lower bars next to a Devious lower :haha:

Electric Compressor, i had to get rid of the engine driven :(

2b7s for the back

My rear notches are cut and I'll get them welded up and installed after Thanksgiving.
I'll update as I go!

im super excited, too bad i wont have my covered, heated garage built in time to work on my blazer in it before the cold is over. :(
My mom is making me my own 3-car garage/shop to store all my shit in as a birthday/x-mas present combined. Just to the house doesn't look like a junkyard anymore :bigthumb:
And yeahhh, i know, so much for the secret but I want a big buildup thread of my own :bigthumb:
I'll get the notches as welded up as I can tomorrow :bigthumb:
Oh and I got rid of my engine driven because I felt it cluttered the engine compartment too much and my homemade bracket was ugly. Its only a show truck that'll go up and down so I don't really need that much air. I don't like to show off much anyway. If I get switch happy I'll throw on a bottle of nitrogen
thanks for the comments :bigthumb:

why not? that same size tubing is strong enough for 4-link bars. They hold the weight of the truck, twisting force of the bags on the bars and the torque of the engine and keep it together, I figure the notch would be okay. Besides, it'll only a Sunday driver.
Who knows, maybe I'll just change my mind halfway through the project and to an entire stock floor. Right now I plan on stockflooring it from the firewall to behind the seats. After that, just do conventional. BTW, the size of that tubing is 2"x2"x1/4" its not as thin as it looks, its a BITCH to cut. Well, at least with the tools I have to work it with

guns are fun,
and it does get pretty cold out especially if the wind is blowing...
tomorrows high of 52 here and typically it will get to near freezing before winters out

I've made some, but my gf took the camera away from me. I got my lower bars tacked on, the rest of the frame wirebrushed (I can leave things bare metal all winter and they'll never rust :D )
Today I made some front "perches" for my upper bars to go to the frame and see if I have enough time to get em in. Then I'll do some fine tuning then get my air brackets in

it gets actually pretty cold. i think the other night where i live (25 miles east of houston) it got down to like 30 something...then there's the wind chill. the wind is what is really bad down here, all that humidity in it. brrrrrr, it's a damp cold down here not dry like the north. when i went to philly in 6th grade, it was like 20 outside and i was in shorts. people looked at me like i was crazy lol

Laid it out today. Tucks the 235/70/15s HARD with 1/2" to go. Just a tenth or two smaller than a 245/35/22. I'll be running 20s but going bigger will be as simple as 5 lugnuts.
I also reconsidered my 2x2 notch. Its nice and solid but it looks hideous. With the amount of lift im getting, its very noticeable between the fenders and looks ugly. Went to the metal yard today and picked up a 6ft. chunk of 2x4x1/4" for $10. Im going to cut out my notches one at a time and re-make them. What was I thinking

Yeah, matter of fact that's exactly what I asked for but couldn't find it in the scrap section. They only had it in whole pieces and they only sold it in 20 foot increments. I don't need that much not to mention it wouldn't fit in my bed. They were actually bulldozing a whole bunch of scrap when I was there. It was slim pickings so I picked the next best thing

i kinda didn't want to say but i had to put the leaf springs back on and get it driveable.
I got tired of working on gravel and worse of all the place im working on it is not level. My garage won't be done for months since im working 6 days a week so right now im slowly making space in the garage so I can sneak it in there and get the truck torn apart again so when my mom finds out, it'll be stuck in the garage until its finished
Im bagging my pickup though. Just need to get a full day and wire the airshocks to the valves and throw in the front bags

New pics. This is all i could take before the batteries died. I had to rip out the entire 4-link, put the leaves back on, put the gas tank back on and moved it into the garage. 3 weeks worth of work down the drain. At least i have a flat, perfectly level surface to work on now. There was lumps and shit on the ground and it was coming out crooked when i was outside. I also re-did the notch with 2x4x1/4 and laid it out today. I need to cut off my drag block up front to lay it out entirely but the back is flat on the ground
4-link goes back in tomorrow
What was I thinking

I ran into somewhat of a problem. Are the bags too far off center to cause problems? I would really like to run the bags outside the frame (like Kyle) and I don't want to cut into the frame vertically to make the bags fit. I can't run the bars and bags on the inside because of my dual exhaust and the uppers are in the way. If I can't find a way to make this work im going to have to ditch my whole super-lift idea and go over axle :(

or the upper mount point to the lower mounting point?
or more likely the mount off center in relationship to centerline the lower bar? if this is the case the bag has to be centered as the lower bar cannot take a tortional/ twisting force.

Couple guys on s10forum all agree the bars offset like that would have too much torsional stress like jsp also mentioned. Im going to cut off my exhaust and more of the floor tommorrow and see if i can make it work on the inside of the frame

The centerline of the bag is still not on the centerline of the 2x2, its probably OK but I need to find reasons to learn this new Solidworks tool at work. Unfortunately the person who can teach me is swapped and I just got new responisbilities.

That's what I thought but I guess its designed to be off center. If you look at the bottom circle plates, there is no way to center the bag unless I drill holes through the bar, which I didn't want to do. I do put the airbag as close to the center as the bottom bolt holes will allow.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v506/s10blaza/DSCF1443.jpg
I even thought about pivoting the bag 90* in either direction to center the bag on the bar but that would require the upper bag plate to be moved as well and I couldn't figure out a good spot to put it in.
I'll see how much it twists in a day or two once i get everything welded up and tighten all the bolts.
Besides, the blazer will only get driven to cruises and shows

I have the same bars and brackets for my lowers. I also figure it will be ok as mine will just be for shows and weekend cruises.
If I remember correctly, the bushings will last a good amount of time daily driven so little to moderate use will be good with me.

I am about to do a detailed 3d model of my blazer. that way I can engineer certain thing I wish to try on it, and I can render it to see how it will look ina finished state.

heck no. The orange hose with hose clamps is only hooked up to a shrader valve and I use the shop compressor to get lift. Once the floor goes back in and the tank gets mounted I'm using DOT PTC fittings on everything.

Thanks. Yeah those rims are just garbage. I had em around the yard and to my surprise they're the same diameter as 20s with 255/35 tires so I used them as mockup. They're not even GM rims, they came from my old Explorer. I just ground out the holes and made em fit.
Too bad I won't get the rims I want for a while considering they're so expensive. I have my eyes set on a set of Foose Nitrous PIC (http://www.mhtwheels.com/images/gallery/foose-MAGNUM-BLK.jpg)
I'll buy the rims when the truck is driveable. No sense in spending $2500 in rims that are just going to sit for months with no use. i'll finish the rest of the truck with that money
(BTW, the rear end still goes up about 2-3 more inches with more air in the bags)

Ha ha, that would be nice! I keep pushing the guy he bought it from to pull it out of his Camaro asap so I can start working on it.
He is getting the whole serpentine setup from mine, however. I'm going to strip them and re-paint them and put the left side back on so he can mount his York compressor and keep things nice and reliable
Now I gotta figure out how to lift the body off the frame by myself. Has anyone taken it off with no lifts? How many people did it take?

Thanks for the tip Martin, I kinda had that same idea only I can just use the cherry picker instead of the big jacks. Or maybe not, I'll see when I get around two it. its just a steering column and 4 bodymounts that are keeping the body on now
yup, im doing sfbd from the firewall to the 4-link hangers then "traditional" after that since im making an entire new floor. Im going to have a tonneau cover thingy right behind the seats that spans the entire rear area with a bench seat. curtwood custom thinks the same way I do :D

I basically did the same thing phatfarmer did. I used a cherry picker after I ran out of floor jack. In fact I lifted the back with the cherry picker by the hinge pins for the tailgate. Not near as heavy as an engine / trans.
And I did it by myself. Amazing how there's no buddys around when its time to lift a body. :D

I did the same thing as Martin too, I used 4x4's instead of the beams he shows and it works fine. Takes forever by yourself, but it can be done. Be careful though, I see you are not on a cement surface so take your time getting the base level. We don't need to see pics of squished body parts...

i did the same as the other guys, by my self though
what i did was used the jack on the beam and lifted it a bit at a time, and used jackstands....
then when i ran out of lift i would lock the jackstand, loser the jack and place a 4x4 and give it an additional four inch lift.
took me mabe four hours to get it all seperated and lifted.
having a spare set of wheels always works too;)

I'm only 5'7". Im not tall, at all.
Here's the weird thing though. Its dropped to the pinch weld but it only dropped the body 3 1/4". My body mounts are not worn out or anything.
I always heard it was at least 4" on a blazer to the pinch. So, 3" of headroom I'm losing, BUT, I'm going to be using seats out of a Cavalier or a Fiero, which I've heard are about 2" shorter than stock blazer buckets. I've also seen people section 1" out of the stock seat rails so after everything's said and done, I shouldn't lose any headroom, maybe an inch.
That's why I decided to not do the stock floor bodydrop. Its a ton of extra work for only 1" of headroom I'd save
And I'm also going to extend the rocker down to the pinch like guiltybydesign did, two reasons.
One, I want to be able to run some inner fenders up front to keep the engine bay looking clean. I hate seeing a really nice truck pop the hood and the ugly dirty tires are right there
Two, it looks nicer, I hate the shadow you see at certain angles when its dropped true rocker
Also, look what I just came home with-
32x9 utility trailer fenders for 15" wheels with fender backs. $50 total with tax. Most other places I called wanted $40 for EACH fender

03-13-2006, 07:15 PM
yea man, your def. laying pinch, i wouldnt worry about it all. Those two 4x4s dont lie, and even if your measurements are off, that bitch is laying so there is no need to worry about it, start cutting fillers
wow, i got a hell of a deal onmy trailer fenders, i got some 32x9s for my front for all of 14 bucks a piece.
88S10_Blazer
03-13-2006, 09:39 PM
very nice man, i dropped mine 4 1/2 and my pinch lays hard. i could probably cut it off and still lay. frame in the back that layed before is about 1/2 inch away.
lookin sick, i'm tackling my firewall at the moment and new tubs. not lookin forward to the steering or tanny linkage.

Most other places I called wanted $40 for EACH fender

that's turning out to look real nice man. You should write a book on how to do a bodydrop. I could kill 2 birds with one stone during time spent on the john then.
Oh yea did you ever find out if that was an SS or not, hadn't seen the thread in a few days and was wondering if it was.

if you look close you'll notice they are :D
Look right by where the cord of the grinder is, you can see the amount of angle I gave it and the small filler I made for it
They're not as angled as I would've liked but I have limited fabricating tools. If I had a brake and english wheels and planishing hammers, etc.. I would've made the filler plates with contours and curves instead of flat fillers with pie cuts and straight bends. Hell if I had all the tools I probably would've stockfloored it in the first place ;)
Here's an example of a traditional with straight up and down plates

Im far from being good enough to write a book on the subject, im learning as I go. Kyle is better suited to write one
And I'll find out if its an SS for sure tommorrow, its a big drive out there and I haven't had the chance to go pick it up.

06-30-2006, 03:09 AM
LOL yeah I think they're Panthers. I borrowed them off a buddy to double check fitment. They're a little too flashy for my personal taste. My Eagles are on backorder for another month or two. Im thinking twice about them because they're so popular now but I really like em. Im thinking of cancelling my order altogether and getting these. They're much cheaper than the Eagles and I'm gonna have to buy FWD offset anyway
http://i11.ebayimg.com/05/i/06/2d/ba/72_1.JPG
What do you guys think? They're BMW rims but i like these too
Anyway. The gas pedal i modified by bending it forward a tad and the brake pedal I was able to leave alone. I did some heavy floorwork around that area especially since i had to move the steering column up 2.5"
Thanks for the kind words and I had to dissappoint a few people again this year about going to heatwave. with me getting promoted its just not happening this time :( Its all good the extra cash will sure help me get this thing finished

wiring harness is going inside the cowl area. If you notice my firewall pics I left a few holes in the firewall for the wires to go through. I plan on keeping the fuel injection, I may upgrade to an LT1 sometime though

Wow I can't believe its been 3 months since I worked on this thing. Well I've been saving up and gathering parts and finally got the weekend off to work on it.
So I worked from 8 am until now today on getting the truck to lay with the 20s on and the stock control arms. When I first mounted them the front was 3" off the ground :0

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v506/s10blaza/laidout.jpg
The front may look like it doesn't lay flat all around but that's because the front crossmember is resting on a bump in the cement, i can assure you it does:D
Tomorrow I just need to finish welding the frame for the tie rod notches and I can start to put the rest of the body back on and the motor within the week
Anyway, I've been working on this thing for 20 hours straight, im
goin to bed
BTW- Allow me to recommend power performance ball joints. Those things are the shit! Im done with that mcquayy norris autozone crap. Super nice quality and more articulation than stock ones for the same price

have you tried laying it down with the motor in yet? mine for some reason is hitting the uppers on the headers and is about 1/2 inch from laying the front crossmember.
s10blaza
10-08-2006, 11:33 AM
yeah i plan on cutting the crap out of the stock arms so that it lays until I can afford a decent set of tubulars. I just need to get this thing put together before i totally lose interest in it
but the crossmember lays flat on the floor without the motor, I had to cut some huuge notches on the lower arms to clear the frame properly as well as the frame so the arm can pivot that high
