the only way to know for sure is to count the splines.

the majority of the first gens were 26 spline. the cross over to 28 splines was in the 90/91 year however it seems to be inconsistent, almost like the assembly plants used up old stock and new stock at the same time.

ok thanks just to be clear the splines are the ridges at the end of the axle right i'm asking because i want to do it myself because the shops where i have been to they charge between 1000-2500 to put them in only shop that sounded nice to me and had a reasonable price is 500+tax but it was a hole in the wall shop that didnt look to professional

You can install them yourself so long as you have some common sense & decent tools. I can "walk" you through it if you want.

seems gear teeth are the most common failure. dont know id be too concerned about your axles. Id just drive it. If your really bothered get a spare rear axle.

Its like putting more ram in a computer thats 10 years old, yes it may help, but whats the point when the rest is......well junk.

your stock? Your more than likely not going to have a failure but it can happen, so like i said, if your REALLY that bothered get a spare.

    i agree with superbee

the 10 bolt 7.5/7.625 is more prone to case deflection which results in gear tooth destruction.
