    EGR valve?

Im posting this about my girlfriends 95 blazer. The symptoms im seeing from it are these: slow to crank (turns and turns then finally starts up. Dont notice this at all if the truck has been recently on.)
rough idle (some times much worse than others. It was jumping about 250 rpm at idle on me driving one night)
black smoke out the exhaust pipe (only notice it sometimes)
sometimes when you turn the ignition off the engine tries to keep running and kinda dies as if it stalled out or something. Kinda tricky to explain.
She also complained before of her brakes being more/less nonexistant when the check engine light would come on. Her dad pulled the codes for me and says its only showing a code (32?) for EGR valve. Im wondering if these symptoms line up with that and if so, what is the exact process of cleaning/changing it. A price and difficulty estimate would be appreciated, as well as any other suggestions.

It sounds like it is the EGR. I had This problem on and off for about 3 months. If you don't know, it is under where the intake is. Just take it off using a 10mm socket and get the carbon "rocks" out of it. Spray some carb cleaner and slap it back on. I just unhooked mine after i put it back on. all it does is recirculate the exhaust gases so it won't affect the performance. If anything it will pick up a little better. The Service engine soon light will stay on but I can deal with that rather than the rough idle. Eventually I am going to make a plate to cover the holes and then put the valve back on and have it hooked up so the SES light will not be on. Hope this helps

Code 32. EGR valve is stuck open. Take the EGR valve off and clean it. Clean the crud out of it. Just like Audio said. Use carburetor cleaner. Reinstall it. If that did not solve the problem then get a new EGR valve. Also, check for a vacuum leak.

If you take an EGR valve off you will be having 1. exhaust leaking from the tube that leads to is and 2. a vacuum leak unless you plug the vacuum line going to the EGR valve 3. hotter cylinder temperatures which will cut gas mileage down. I would only use that method as a last resort kind of thing.

If you want to test to see if the EGR valve is working or not before you take it off this is what you do. 1. hook a vacuum pump to the EGR valve where the vacuum hose goes into it 2. pump it up to about 15in hg. of vacuum 3. make sure it holds vacuum 4. release the vacuum and start engine 5. pump the vacuum pump up to 15in hg. of vacuum and listen to the engine speed to flucuate (sp).

If it changes then the EGR valve is ok. But if you're getting a code 32 and all those symptoms (sp) I would skip checking it and go ahead and clean it out.

While your EGR is off, not only clean the egr and make sure the pintle moves freely, but clean out the EGR port on the intake manifold as well..When putting the EGR back on, replace the existing gasket with the newer style screened gasket....

    Good point rlith.

Also I just want to emphasize (sp) some more about not taking it off. If you want to try to get every teany tiny bit of power you can. Take it off. Plug all the holes and make sure you have no vacuum leaks. But doing that WILL make the cylinder temperatures hotter. No ways around it. This means that 2 things will be negatively effected.

    1. Gas mileage. It will drop. However, if your EGR valve is stuck open it will stay the same, but if you clean it up and get it working your gas mileage will improve once you reinstall it.

    2. Emissions. If you have emission tests in your state by taking the EGR valve off you've increased the chance of flunking the sniffer test. Even if you do not have sniffer tests in your state who's to say that you won't sell the Blazer to someone who has to put it through emissions. Not to mention if they get a tester who is on the rag and decide to check under the hood and see the plugged holes where the EGR valve was they won't even put it through the tests. Automatic fail. At least that's how it is in Maryland.

Easier just to do the restirctor.... Get the better low end torque and idle, actually add to gas miledge, and still leave the 10% needed for proper NOX emissions :)

FYI: in EGR the r stands for recirculation, not restrictor..

I was referring to the restictor mod for the EGR... It restricts the EGR passage...

Where is the EGR valve? Is it that black cylinder thing under the vortec cover? I've had the same problems and I took that thing out to check if there a buildup of liquid there. Its like some black plastic piece with wires attached to it? How can you clean that?

No the black thing under the Vortec cover is the throttle vane... The EGR is under the main intake (throttle body)... It's a 3" long cylincer connected to the lower intake manifold

It is directly under where the air intake "hose" connects to the intake manifold. It IS a black cylinder looking thing. You will need a 10mm socket and an extension to get it out. For more info look at my post (the 2nd post in this thread) Hope this helps

bad news. took it out and cleaned it up (it was pretty nasty, the button type thing whatever its called would stick down when we pushed it down.) and also cleaned out the tubes it connected to but the truck is still idling rough and there is a strong smell of unburnt gas, hard to start and doesnt turn off like it should. We also checked out the error codes and it was only throwing a 32 and 45 as old codes.
While we were at it we sprayed some carb cleaner into the throttle body trying to clean out the whole system. It put out a bit of smoke but we just arent gettin anywhere. Im outta ideas any suggestions?
