    305 parts list.

im building a 305 i got for free. it is from 80-85 stock 4 bbrl. im not going to crazy with this engine, just some bolt on stuff.

these are the parts i have.
edelbrock performer EPS dual plane intake
wolverine blue racer cam, valve lift .443/465, cam lift .295/.310, .050 dur. 214/224, adv dur. 280/290.
pete jakson gear drive (just for fun)
    8 mm wires

    parts i plan on getting
edelbrock 600cfm carb with electric choke
    headers

thats pretty much it, anything else not mentioned will remain stock. how much horsepower do u think it will have? any other suggestions?

    250-275 hp
I'd lean closer to 250 though heads will probably hold it back a lot.

the heads i have are 80-84 305 HO, with 1.84 intake, and 1.5 exhaust, with 58cc chambers. will these make a difference?

this was just a thought, what if i put these heads on my stock 283, what will the compression ratio be with the stock 283 pistons?

would the 283 be worth running over the 305. the bore of the 283 is bigger but it has the 3" stroke over the 3.48" stroke of the 305 so it wont be a torquey. i also haven't decided yet if im gonna run a 4 or 5-speed or a th350 with a stage 2 shift kit. any input is welcome.

    thanks

283 big cam, 4.10s, and the 5 speed stick will be the most fun.

Going from memory here but I think 283s came with either 57 or 64 CC heads. so compression wise you should be OK with 58cc. Stock pistons may be questionable any wys oalong with the rods to if you start revving it up to where it will be fun.

There some more chatting we can do once you narrow your choices down.

    typo alert..... 1.94 intake

1.84 isn't a normal intake valve size that I am aware of..... 1.94 is very common.

To make the motor fun.... you should bump the compression, big ass cam and make it a 7000 to 8000 rpm motor. That means better pistons, rods and good balancing. But you will have a very distinctive always racing rpm sound with the 5 speed and the right gears.

well i the heads i have are 1.84. right now i can't afford to spend that kind of money on an engine. my plan is to use my 283 short block with the 305 ho heads, my ebelbrock intake, the blue racer cam, and a 600 cfm carb to top it off, and thats all i can afford right now. but thanks for the ideas, they may come in handy in the future.

how much horsepower do u think the 283 will have with the same parts compared to the 305. i know the 305 is gonna have more torque.

Reminds me of a conversation I witnessed in pakistan about the performance differnce between a 75 cc versus an 80 cc moped.

Save the 283 for when you can do it right. Given what you've got the 305 should make 15-20 horse more.

I'm still interested in seeing a link to anything supporting 1.84 intake heads. I thought factory chevies SBC only had 1.71, 1.94, and 2.02 for intakes. After market go even larger 2.05 and up to 2.10. Just making sure I didn't miss anything, as oddities are worth bucks.
