    it runs!

i finally got my 305 running. its the one i talked about in this thread. i put it on my dads buddies engine stand that he built so u can tune your engine before u put it in your car. i have also put 1 5/8" to 3.5" long tube headers, a holly 600cfm carb plus all of the other parts that i said in the other thread. it fired right up first try. i put my flowmaster 40 series on it to quiet it down so i could hear the gear drive and boy does it sound mean. its running so strong. the cam has a nice lopey idle. my dads car buddies can't believe its a 305. one even said it runs as good as a brand new crate motor.:D

i have a question tho. today i fired it up and a puff of blue smoke came out the exhaust. i let it run for a bit, then shut it down. when i started it again there was no smoke at all, what could be causing this? is there any engine solvants i can buy to fix it?

    thanks

the guys on this forum helped me out a lot when i was building this engine. thanks again.

here are some pics from when i was building it. (note i am not using that fan in the pics, im using an electric s blade fan.)

If it smoke after you rebuilt it and started it the first tiem it was just the assembly lube.

If its an old engine a puff at start up is usually valve seals.

Being a new motor, everything needs time to break in. The piston rings take awhile before it will stop puffing out smoke and burning oil. Take a look at the link below. I explain a little bit about piston rings.

i have another question. i have the choke wired open. when the engine is running at idle the rpms will rise a bit then fall, then rise the fall, but not to the point where the engine stalls. if i close the choke a bit or put my hand over the carb the rpms seem to level out. what it causing this?

How much cam do you have?

might need more fuel at idle, tweak on your idle circuits

IS this your first cam? as its big eenough to have some lope to it.

Actually with a stick I run the idle a little lower, but you can argue than point either way I guess.

shoot for 800 to 1000 for the idle

yes it is my first cam. it does have some nice lope to it.

right now i have the idle set between 550 - 650, i guess i should turn it up a bit then.
