    truck died at 60mph?

    ok so im just curious as to everyones opinion on what happened here...

    first, i have a new gm alternator 100 amps, yellow top battery, pushin a jl1800d amp runnin to my 12" w7

    well i was cruisin down 46(local highway) and im doin about 55-60 just cruisin by some dude, and i go over a bump and i see my gauges just all drop to 0 rpms and 0 mph really really fast, and go back up to normal, and now im thinkin wait a minute this shit happened last time my alternator blew, and then i was thinkin nothin of it cause it just happened really fast, well about a mile down the road, boom it does it again, and all the lights on the dash come on and the truck just shuts off, while im doin about 65, and im like wtf, so i drop it in nuetral, start her back up, put it in drive and continue on my way, i get to where i was goin, park and pop the hood, the alternator was pretty fuckin hot, and the coils werent bright red like usual, but they arent brown like they were fried, their a little bit of a faint red, but thats ok,

    well it hasnt done it since, but this was like 3 days ago, and im really curious as to wtf happened, and hoping it doesnt happen again

    hmm check your wiring for everything ....mabye upgrade your Alt wires..also on yellow tops it is good to ground it twice ...ground the second one to the frame

    x2 on the grounds. If not, maybe your ignition module?

    only happened once, mind u ive had the yellow top in for almost 5 months now, and the alternators been in there for about a year

    check the small wire between your battery(POS) and your Alt. i bet you have cooked it . up grade the wire to a little bit bigger from the battery(Pos) and the alt. . just by what you have said this sounds to be your problem.......lol happened to me last year:D the wires wasnt designed to be pulling so many amps threw it , so they burn up .

    but it only happens once? wouldnt that cause it to continuously(sp) happen?

    just check it out and see what you find , it still could be it if its shorting out

    Sorta thing happened to me too......only all my lights (headlight/gauges/etc. no neons) cut off but came right back on....radio too..like all electronics but engine didn't stop...didn't hit a bump or nething...jus cut off goin bout 60-65...happens oly every once in a while..i got a 200W amp (peak) but i used to run a 4k Audiobahn (b4 it was stolen) on the same stock bat/alt....could it have messed it up and if so y would i jus now be feeling the effects?....jus wondering

    so yeah, there is no small wire from the positive battery to the alternator

    theres 2 big red wires, and a big black wire, goin from the positive, the black wire goes to the alternator, its a good 8 guage wire, all of them are

    This happenend to me a few months. I was driving down the road and all of a sudden all the gagues dropped and all the lights on the gagues came on and then not even 3 secs later it went back to normal. It ended up being the starter on mine. Hasnt happenend since

    Fetto, when was the last time you had a tune up done on your truck? 100 watt alt might not be enough... it would probably be a good idea to run 160 or more. Also having a separate battery for your system is a good idea. Im planning on doing all that shit to mine some time soon with help from my auto tech teacher.

    DJ, sounds to me like you should consider getting a new alt...

    i have a 100 amp alternator, its a gm alternator so iknow its holding up well, and thats why i droped my delco and bumped up to the yellow top optima battery, does wonders, i am thinkin about goin up to a 200 amp alternator but i need money for that first, and i gotta do that rollpan first....and my last check up was done at 55k miles, i now have 81, so its under normal
