    misfire, smell gas

Well I've been fighting a p0300 random misfire for a while now.
The other day I started it up (problem is not always at startup) and it was misfiring and I could smell gas really strong.
That leads me to believe its spark.
I just don't know whats wrong. I've taken the plug wires off and verified every spark. I don't know what it could possibly be.
Check out that link in my profile. Its worth 50 bucks to you.

Have you tried anything with the gas cap theory?

Do you have a different distributor you can try?

I tightened the gas cap 5 extra clicks
I have another I could try, just havnt gotten to it yet.
No other dist to test. I was thinking about getting the msd billet dist. but its like 300 bucks.
How could I readjust the valves?

I dont think that its anything with the vavle lash. Since, you replaced the lifters and pushrods, and made no difference.

Id try the new gas cap. Simple and easy.

If you can get ahold of a different distributor, I"d try it for the S&G's. I don't think you need to shell out the money on the billet msd one, but if you know someone you can swap out for a day, shouldn't take all that long to swap them and re-time the motor.

im just sayin there could be a vavle missadjusted..that would cause it to miss.

to readj them u just rotate the motor till the exaust vavle opens and adj the intake roll the rod in ur fingers till theres drag on it the tightin 1/4 turn..the rotate the motor till the exaust vavle closes and the intake opens as the intake starts to close you adj the exaust..do that for all of them..then just retime ur motor 10@ before tdc...try replacing ur distributor too..

Have you pulled each sparkplug to see which one is dumping the gas? If not give that a whirl. What might be happening is one of your injectors has gone bad or is stuck open and dumping fuel which would give you the random misfire. At that point it's just swapping out that one injector. Or it's possible your overall injector unit is going bad.

I had a set of feelers when I set the valves.
Got a line on a rent-a-distributor but it wont be in until next week.
I cannot just pull the spark plug and see because its intermittent.
I replaced the MAP sensor and it got rid of the stuttering on low accleration, but holding it at 70 it still misfires.
Thinking maybe that plastic plenum might have a crack in it?
Doesnt the MAP tie in directly with the MAF to tell the PCM how much air is in there?

That could be a problem right there. I don't think you'd need to set the valves w/ feeler gauges. Unless your runnign a differetn style camshaft, vavle lash should be zero. So, I don't see any reason for the feelers.

do you had solid or hydro lifters?with hydros yo should adjust the vavles when at operrating temp.you need to start adjusments when the exhaust vavle opens then you adjust the intake by rolling the pushrod in you fingers untill theres a slight drag on the rod.then 1/4 turn then rotate engine until the exhasut closes then when intake opens and starts to close you repeat the same thing...roll rod 1/4 turn.and repeat untill you are done.

with solid you need to set them to the min specs like 2 thousands or somin like that...but make sure the engines warm to adjust them..

and its not a normal distributer???you cant time it???its not c.o.p or d.i.s...so why not?

The computer solves for the timing.
I dont think its the valve lash because hte problem was occuring before I did all the work.

ok this may either be incredibly stupid on my part or on yours, i think maybe you have already fixed your problem but you are not reseting your computer properly and the o300 is just your original misfire try taking the main positive terminal wire off and touching it to your negative terminal with negative cable still attached to the terminal and hold it there for 5 minutes with your headlights on then reinstall it the check engine light will be off drive it if the light comes back then ask me again.
