went to the junkyard and found one out of a navajo (the same as an explorer....

Its is the 3L73. They said they would pull it and sell it for $1.25 so i think im going to get it. (drum brakes).

Its pretty rusty but i think it will clean up.

Will 3.73 be too short of a gear? Right now with 3.42's I run around 2200 at 70. I dont mind a little more but it shouldnt be more than a couple hundred rpm's should it?

    i pluged some numbers

    this is an example

    27" tire
    .64 overdrive
    3.42 rear gear

    70mph = 2100 rpm

    27" tire
    .64 overdirve
    3.73 rear gear

    71 mph = 2300 rpm

you could always run a little larger tire to drop the rpm some

    hey thats great man, thanks.

One thing i dont get, people say it wont really effect the top end speed rpm but it will just make it rev up faster, i dont really get that, anyone want to elaborate?

    not a problem

well gears will effect your top end speed, by how mcuh depends on tire size and gear ratios

making it rev up faster, not sure, the way ive heard it is gear ratios just move around your power band, gears realy arent my think, maybe so others could elaborate on this

you'll be fine with 3:73's and OD, maybe go up 200 rpms and loose 0.5 mile to the gallon if that.

Not bad considering a 8.5'' 10-bolt is almost this much used at a pick and pull.
