the one I measured did have disc brakes. It is a couple of inches wider, WIDER THAN A 4WD .
The spring perches are pretty much right on. Tell me where I'm wrong

measured from backing plate, but it was a disk brake rear. the rotors are narrower than drums, so overall will be about the same as drums. But still, a 2wd S10 rear is 48" In the swap article , he said the rear was a 1 1/2" longer. He had to be measuring a S10 4x4 which is 52"

billip you ever do this? what year was the one you measured?

just from eye balling them on the road, the newer ones look wider than like the early 90's ones. do the explorers have differnt offsets for 2wd and 4x4 like we do?

for who wrote the how too, can you re-remeasure the rear end.

It will be bolted to rear diff cover held on by the one of the same bolts that holds the cover on. Should be on the lower left hand side of the cover, typically points downward so you gotta look close. It should be there though, if it's not then the cover was probably pulled and someone forgot to put the tag back on. Might be able to check the chassis for a code or if all else fails pull the cover and count teeth/check for posi

hrmmm, i am thinkin the newer ones are wider. not positive tho, need to go out and see.

the people that did the swap with no problems, did they all use drum rears out of older modles?

That may be the problem, not sure about the newer ones since this was the one and only 8.8 rear I had found in the junkyard.

This could be the case, which is why I highly stress to everyone to measure the rears before buying just to be safe. The other swap that I was told about before I did mine was a guy who also used a drum rear but he said he knew another guy who did a rear with discs also, so I dunno. I think at this point it's best to just head out to the junkyard with a tapemeasure and keep your fingers crossed.

I've had all years explorers, I have a 93, had a 97 and a 00. I've had the same set of wheels on each and they are all in the same place so there is no reason why they would be wider, unless the bodies of the newer ones were wider, which I doubt.

well there is some kind of variation of the rears out there that is giving us the problems.

after talking with hector, the explorers have the same differnce in 2wd and 4x4 as blazers do(offset). to me, that sounds where the problem is coming from. just have to stick with the 2wd's.
