It will tell you in the owners manual. Check the index under capacities. It will have a chart.

The filter is in the tranny.
Dropping the pan will reveal it. The filter kit will have a new gasket for the pan. Last time I pulled mine I fit a screw on it to drain the oil.
The tranny will drain all but the converter which will hold from 1-1.5 l or quarts.
Buying 4 should be fine for a filter change.
    When in doubt Gas it!

Ok, My leak is definatly coming from the top of the tranny oil pan.
I got 12 quarts of dexron III for like 15 bucks, and a gasket/filter kit for 8.50.
So I had it steamed so i can see everything and make sure its clean and that that's where its leaking from. And I put it ontop of cardboard so I can see whats dripping and where.
so i found it, top of the tranny oil pan, but now that it's cleaned I see 4L60E on the side. I thought my truck came with the 700r4?! The transmission guy who worked on it said it was a 700r4?
    What's up with that?

your 4-l60e is a 700r-4. the only differnece is that the 4-60e is electronic and the 700r-4 isn't

yeah th 4L60E is just and electronic version of the 700R4. It's all controlled by the computer. The last time I changed mine it took about 5-6 qts after the new filter filled up.
