    Cutting coils....

Hey Im just in the process of cutting 2"'s off of my drop coils.

I was just wondering how people measured and cut the right amount. It seems liek an eazy concept... measure and cut but once they are out its alot more complicated then I thought. measuring from the top of the coil down doesnt exactly work... what did everyone do for this??

    Thanks Greg

    why does it not work?
that is how you need to do it measure from the top down ever how much you want and chop it off.
this is real easy so don't make it hard on yourself.

take the coils out. stand them side by side. take a yellow or bright-colored grease pen. measure from the end of the soil spring down AROUND the coil. NOT JUST 2" DOWN and cut on the nearest part. you're actually going to measure around the wrapped coil. and 2" really won't do that much for you, measure 4" and repeat on the second coil. then return to spring pocket; make shure the spring seats properly or you'll sit uneven. drive around town at speed and let springs compress to ride height.

yes it will be a ruffer ride b/c you're taking the rebound and dampening out of the suspension. the coils are designed to do their job. once the heat from *however* they are cut is added to them and then new weight put on them it can drastically change the ride

    Thanks for that info....

I was just wondering because from talking about this is other threads I learned that the amount you cut from the spring is the amount that your truck will drop. Not perfectly the same amount but close...

So when they say the amount u cut is the amount it drops.. is that measuring around the coil like u were saying .. or is it the vertical height.

    Thanks Greg

just be careful, if you let too much heat into the spring it will loose its strength, then it gets bouncy

I have cut three different sets of coils and I just measured from the very top of the coil down whatever I wanted and chopped it off and got the drop I wanted every time.

mine worked out to be vertical when i cut it.

do not heat them, very hard to get exact and dampens the sping to hell.

I remember you cutting ur coils... so u cut 1 full coil off is that from the tip of the spring and directly down..?

Also im not sure if my drop coils are 1 or 2 " 's How would I go about finding out... there blue .. if that helps . Is there a specific length for each coil?

Sorry for all the questions.. Just trying to do it right the first time

man do you want two more inches? If so it don't matter what coils you have, just measure down from the tip 2" and cut it off with a grinder and put it back on and be happy.

network:rofl: :bigthumb: your not the first person to do that.

but yeah, you got the idea for cutting the 1 coil.

blue is usually ground force, if thats the orginal color. measue the height of the coil, that will help to determine what it is.

i would listen to mpeace, his advice helped me out alot when i did mine:bigthumb:
