Opinions on the Ford 8.8" for rear end swap

Ive been browsing around on the s10v8.com forum and saw a couple guys running the Ford 8.8" rear out of an explorer with no problems. What do you V8 guys think about it? What would u recommend for a 400Hp 350 build? Keep in mind that my truck is being built mainly for show, I won't be track racing with it but I do want to show it off if need be

im gonna be running one behind my v6

its a good swap they are just as strong as a chevy 12 bolt, cheeper and easier to find plus they are a straigt bolt in mod

it should hold up fine for waht you are gonna need it for

ive been doing my reaserch on this, so if you have any questions ill do my best to answer them

most people Ive talked to now say that unless Im building a huge drag monster, the 9" will be overkill

and thats not what Im building, Im going to follow an article taht hector gave me from Car Craft about building a budget 440Hp 350, and its going to be used for street driving, maybe a little showing off and thats it

as far as a 9" being overkill...ya never know if it is built too strong..but you will if it is not built strong enough....better to be safe than sorry....IMO..I could be wrong

You can also just do an 8.5" S10 rearend. If you find a 2wd one, cool, if you find a 4wd, no biggie. You were going to narrow it anyway right? They'll bolt right up, you're rich enough to get one and you won't have a blue oval part on your truck :p:

So are you going to let me build you that 350 or what :smoker:

my brother is runnib an 8.8 exploder rear in his 87 wrangle. hes runnin a 92 t.b.i chevy 350 with a 5 speed. forgot the tranny model. nv35 on 35" tires. or some thing like that. so far so good. he orderd new sping mount. welded them to the rear and good to go. dont forget to weld the axle tubes to the pimkin. they are only held on by ( forgot again) either 2 small pins or a few small spot welds. doin this will also make the rear a bit stronger

THe ford guys seem to be able to keep them under a vehicle. I'll tell you what I know, hopefully its somewhat true although I have never owned or worked on a 8.8 since I own four 9" and some spare houseings, LOL.

The 8.8 has been around since 1983 although the 1995 and newer are supposed to be disk brakes only with 31 spline. stronger than the pre 95 which were 28 spline.

They spin the tubes in the 8.8's center area so I have heard that they weld them or replace them entirely and build bridges etc.

You can't change ratios / centers like a 9" and the pinion doesn't have the 3rd stabilization bearing behind the pinion gear.
