how long of a wrench are you using to turn the engine? I had a long torque wrench to turn mine and it was a complete bitch at TDC. If something was hanging up inside the engine and you turned it over with the starter, you probably would have forced something and broke it. But you probably would have heard it lol.

Sounds to me like its either compression or theres a bit of surface rust that will smooth out when the motor starts running... Thats about the best thoughts i can give you

    good luck man

Maybe you should call up Miss Cleo and have her tell you what's wrong? You don't seem to be inclined to pull the head off and figure out what the real problem is, so I guess paranormal voodoo, hand-waving, and guesswork is all that's left.

Unless I missed a post , you talk about cranking by hand, why won't you crank it with the starter

what did u exactly take apart? did u ever have the starter off? make sure that the starter hasn't acccidently slipped into the teeth of the fly wheel causing a binding situation, which can happen when the vehicle has been tilted and the starter is loose to start with. with plugs removed make sure that for some reason you do not have a valve hitting a piston if the timing chain is timed wrong, if everything there is good, with the plugs removed and the injection unplugged, spin the thing over with the starter if you have just have some rust it will be scrapped off in a few seconds, but if you fear that is the case put a squirt of motor oil in each cylinder before doing this to lube it up a bit, just a few suggestions, good luck
