Another thing I just thought of:

Cooling system. Keep your stock 4.3 radiator and use two 12'' electric puller fans (on the inside of the radiator) instead of an engine driven fan. I like the idea of running them on a thermostat system to cut on around 160 degrees. Flex-a-lite is the best fan to go with. I think the part number is like 210... or maybe 212. I know ZZ4 will know.

Standard 4 bolts mains are tough, but those splayed bolt caps are rock solid.
if you build a 400 keep it a 2 bolt, the webbin in a 400 is different then in a 350 and 4 bolts tend to ahve problems

Great info guys. This will help me tremendously. Ok so lets say I do a 400 with 8.5 rear end. What tranny should I run that will hold up and shift very firm? It would be nice to have an overdrive for the highway as well.

th400 or a 4l80e a 700r4, or 4l60e may hold if built but just go big the first time around

or T56 FTW, < my biased opinion

I'd go with a th350 transmission if you want to keep it a simple automatic. Put in a decent shift kit such as a Hughes Performance kit. Run a converter with an anti-ballooning plate that's matched for the power ban of your motor.

What specs are you thinking for when it comes to the motor?

I put a 3/3 belltech drop, springs in front and blocks in back. The only thing I would change is do spindles in the front instead of springs and lower the back one more inch because it raises the back just a little. But I don't mind because I will be throwing some bigger meats back there anyway once the engine goes in.

what is the ultimate purpose of the vehicle?

    Daily
    Saturday night cruiser
    Street Strip
    Strip

boost range / Horse power expected?
Are you willing to change pulleys (seldom used but a great option IMO) 20% under during the week 20% over on weekends

    budget?

Timeframe you want to complete this in, LOL?

NOTE: many answers are mutually exclusive. ex. (daily , 800 hp, $4000 budget and 3 weeks) :nono: Be somewhat reasonable or the "dark side" of the V8 Conversion forum will come out. ;) This particular section isn't for ricer style bench racing where we  to a picture like some members will do in General Chat.

that being said... Welcome to the forum!
