Thread: Traction Action

Am I floating my valves? The heads came with some pretty stout valve springs. Or maybe the HEI is falling on its face at 5000RPM? All I know is I need to get it right. When I ran the engine on the analyzer it said I was only getting 3-4 oscillations on my coil at idle so maybe that could be a problem at higher RPM. So another $450 for a distributor/ignition box/coil combo??? I think I need to sell my house to support my speed habit. LOL

Stock HEI coils do start loosing power above 3500. I doubt you would need to replace your distributor. MSD HEI kit,( coil, 6AL box w/built in rev limiter, new cap and wire) for 250 from summit.

I'd say something is up with your top end. You should have solid power up to or above 6000 with that cam.

Those Dart heads come with high pressure springs that are 1.450 O.D. The springs that are on there right now are to much for your cam. If I remember right, those springs are good up to .560 lift cam. The reason I know this is cause I have the same set of Dart heads(never sold them yet). Call Comp Cam or summit and get the part number for the cam and get the right set of springs that go with the cam or match it. I hope those springs did not wear down any cam lob's. Tell summit that you are running the Dart heads that have a big pocket for the valve spring. The springs that match the comp cam(should be like 1.230 or something like that) that you are running are smaller than the ones that are one the Dart heads right now. Let us no what you find out from comp cam or summit about the springs pressure and what not. Good luck Mike...

i just finished reading the post, and heres what I ran a while back that worked pretty good,it was cheap too. When I had the stock rear I had 3 inch lowered leafs with a set of cheap traction bars.I had the bars that were for a S-10,where the rubber snubber, when installed, was under the spring eye bolt.I had a posi unit out of a 4wd blazer with 3.73 gears.I ran a best 60 ft of 1.97 on street tires.I never tried slicks on it then, was afraid of the little rearend.I believe my time was a 8.53 @ 84 mph.I had a .030 over 350,268 cam 650 dp holley, old double hump heads and flat tops (10.5 to 1).I also have a turbo 350 with a 4000 stall from tci

I had the Powertrax is my 7 1/2 rear and as soon as I hit 12s I started to break parts. Snapped an axle, broke the pinion gear, and broke the Powertrax itself. I did get 1.8-1.9 60 fts on 275/60R15 Radial T/As on the stock rim though.

the trac bars do help out with the spinning a bit but more of the keep the whole body from flexing. notice if dont have them and you have enough HP you will start noticing a crack above the drivers door on the roof place the bars on and it will stop

seems like we ALL have the same problem.

I can admit that one time (only one time!) i ran a 19.20 @ ~75mph because i spun the one tire from the line to at least the 1000ft mark. I have the video, it looks like my truck is blowing up because theres just white smoke coming from it all the way down the track.

    then the next run i pulled a 13.5 with a 2.0 60ft time

I called a few local junk yards on Saturday morning to find a rear end. I didn't sleep at all because I was soooooo pissed. I found a couple places that have 8.5" s-10 rears w/ posi's. I'm going to check on Monday about what gear ratios they have though. I also am getting a new distributor/ignition box/coil combo and some slicks. I have one question though - Will a 9" slick be wide enough to launch a heavy ass Blazer???

I think all 8.5s in the S10 came with 3.08 gears.

One of the junk yards said he like 3 of them. The other junk yard said he had 2 - 4.3 5spd 2wd s-10's. He said I could look them over and he would cut them out for $150. I love the junk yards around here.

9inches will be enoguh to launch your blaze, just heat them up real quick and you shouldnt have a problem.

they have one junk yard around my house where the guy will be like ya we have it, and you get there and he forgets he knows you and goes nope sorry I dont have it, i dont know who told you i did

makes you want to stab him in the neck
