    99' Jimmy 4WD Rear end...

    Hi,
    New to this forum...
Did GM put a 7.5 inch open rear end in a "Four Wheel Drive?"

I bought a rear end from a guy that had a 4 WD Jimmy with disk brakes...for my 56 Chevy. The RPO codes were gone as the guy he bought it from took the dash board for another truck! If so...it wouldn't be much of a 4 WD!

I have a 56 Chevy Belair and I am wanting to upgrade the rear end along with disk brakes...so I bought it to put into it...as it is 59 and a quarter inches from wheel mounting flange to flange and the 56 original is 60 inches. The brake line enters on the left and thats great because I can run new lines down the frame rail to it. I have disk brakes in the front from an S-10 along with 2 inch dropped spindles, split brake master cylinder and 8 inch booster. It's nice to go fast...nicer to stop it!

Since I am an Old Guy...I want my Chevy to just cruise in...to Florida, Tennessee...Pennsylvania...and where ever. My "hammer it down" days are past me...so my question is this...

Can that rear end have the ring gear and pinion swapped for a 2:...ratio?
My 56' has a 327 300 horse engine, a turbo 350 trans (have a 700R-4 for it) and I want the max milage for the old gallon that I can get...

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! BTW...I am 65 years old!

im pretty sure richmond makes a 2:43 or whatever the low stock chevy gear was. But you have to have a 3:08 or lower rear for it. I mnot sure the differences but i know they list gear sets for 3:08 and lower rears and gear sets for ones that came stock with a numerically higher gear

    the 8.5 is the best 10-bolt ever made '74-81 f-bodies,85-87 g-bodies,00-up 4.3 5spd s10.
you will hear stories of people runnin 11s in late style f-bodies but the amount of passes are definately counted.
you will also hear stories of Grand National owners going 10s on the stock 8.5 then there are some running in the 8s with aftermarket axles in the 8.5 and still going strong
