    01 Blazer X - Bad mpg

Seems my new blazer X is only getting about 14.5mpg combined, but it runs good

    Tune up? Plugs/Wires/Cap/Rotor?

o2 sensors. when they age the switching speed becomes slower and less accurate. they usually dont always throw a code untill they are REALLY bad.

cap, rotor, plugs and wires would hurt also make sure to use good parts. i have had bad experiences with everything accept acdelco ignition parts on these vortec trucks. if you are going to get a cheeper aftermarket cap and rotor make sure it has ALUMINUM contacts, not brass.

also pull the throttle body and look for clean spots on the lower intake. if the intake looks like its been washed clean with fuel then you have a leaky reg/injector pod. there is usually a strong gas smell in the cab when this happens though.

Im about to tackle this problem, it still exists. My last tank was 13.3mpg

Regarding the leaky reg/injector pods...sometimes I think I DO smell gas/exhaust in the cabin, but usually theres a POS truck in front of me so I figure its their exhaust and my heat on full blast pulling it in.

Tell me more about the reg (I assume you mean regulator)/injector pod.

not really much to tell. if an injector o-ring fails then it can leak gas out of the pod. if the regulator fails it can leak fuel. both can cause gas smells in the cab (usually only noticeable with either heat or AC on full blast)

if you pull the throttle body you can see clean spots or if its really bad fuel puddles.

    Here's my plan of attack:

Tune up (including fuel filter, minus spark plug wires)

If that doesnt work, o2 sensors.

if that doesnt work, then I'll dig deeper into what you are describing.

why even change the cap/rotor and plugs if your going to leave the oem wires on there?

Doing a tune up without changing the wires is like changing the oil and reusing an old oil filter...

You can get MSD direct replacement wires cheaper then you can get delco wires. For my v8 vortec I think I paid 90 ish for wires.

Also wires are not as big of an issue as the cap rotor and plugs on the vortex motors. I have put cheap sets on and never had an issue. Now the cap rotor and plugs I always get delco brand.

Plain old Delco basic plugs. Should be less than $3 each. Borg & Warner wires can run about $40-50 at Pep Boys. The Borg & Warner cap/rotor are pretty cheap, and do use aluminum.
